Working as a product designer, UX researcher, and UX lead for over 10 years, I have discovered what works and what doesn’t work in user experience leadership. Here are a few of my core UX leadership beliefs and principles:

STRATEGIC EXECUTION

As a leader, I approach UX as a strategic discipline, vital to the product development process. I lead my team to incorporate critical thinking, user research, and cross-functional team collaboration to establish design standards as well as shape and execute product direction.

INFLUENCING PRODUCT EXECUTION

To influence product execution, I participate in building design strategies and product roadmaps, and convey those strategies to my team through presentations during kick-off meetings and development inception meetings.

DESIGN WORKSHOPS

As a Product Designer, I facilitate design workshops which involve everyone’s participation, from sketching out ideas to voting and deciding what to prototype.

HANDS-ON

I’m a design leader, not a design manager. I stay closely connected with my teams, and work hand-in-hand with them through a collaborative design process.

DESIGN BUSINESS VALUE

To secure funding for the UX department, as well as demonstrate the value of UX and usability improvements, I present the business value and ROI associated with projects to company stakeholders.

OPTIMIZING UX PROCESS

I increased the value of UX deliverables and the recognition of the global UX department by designing a set of UX templates to help streamline the design process and improve collaboration and documentation between teams.
